The cats out of the bag
June 5, 2007
Ok, its official. The cats out of the bag and we have a new league and some big money is pushing it forward.
Welcome to the UFL, the new alternative to the NFL monopoly. New York Times shoots off the first news item about the new league and the founder[s].
The article is definitely worth reading. Here are some bullet points;
- Founder Bill Hambrecht has the experience to go head to head against a beast like the NFL
- Google Senior Exec Tim Armstrong is also a UFL Founder
- UFL already has their executive Spearheads [Bill Daugherty, the C.E.O.; Jon Brod, the C.O.O.; and Andrew Goldberg, a senior analys].
- And what I would say something I expected; Mark Cuban is jumping onboard as their first team owner.
- Team cities already lined up for Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Mexico City .
- Cost effective startup at 30 mill per team- half owner invested.
- Fan buyins! Fans to be able to purchase team shares
- Open door to Friday Night time slot on TV (NFL cannot broadcast on Fridays)
- “Bill Walsh used to tell me that the last 20 players cut from every team were almost interchangeable with the last 20 players to make the team,” Hambrecht says. The new league will hire the best of those last 20 players — along with the best of the Arena players, the Canadian Football League players and so on.
- U.F.L. will be able to offer most rookies, who aren’t top draft choices, far more money than the N.F.L. would give them. And since the N.F.L. salary cap has been negotiated with the players’ union, it can’t be unilaterally changed.
Thats just the tip of the iceburg; What are your thoughts so far?
